Mimosa is a bright yellow cocktail that is named after a plant having beautiful yellow flowers. Mimosa is made of equal parts of champagne and orange juice. French champagne is mostly used in making mimosas; however, dry sparkling wines are also used. You will need a 750 ml bottle of champagne to make 6 to 8 mimosas. Sometimes cranberry juice is used instead of orange juice. You can easily make this simple and refreshing drink at home.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle of sparkling wine or champagne: You can use chilled and dry sparkling wine. You can use champagne as well.
  • 3 cups of fresh orange juice: You can buy orange juice from the market or use freshly squeezed orange juice.
  • Liqueur: You can add a splash of liqueur if you want to.

These portions are appropriate for serving 8 glasses of mimosa.

Mimosa ingredients explained

Sparkling wine

The best champagne for mimosa is the French champagne. But as it is very expensive not many people use it. The best substitute for it is to use sparkling wine like Prosecco or Cava. They are dry and delicious and perfectly mixed with orange juice. The difference between regular wine an sparkling wine is that the latter has carbon dioxide that gives the drink a bubbly sensation.

Orange juice

Buy the best orange juice in the store that is pulp-free and not concentrated. The typical ratio of sparkling wine to orange juice is 50/50. However, if you want your mimosa to be sweeter then you can include more orange juice.

How to make a Mimosa

To make mimosa you need to combine sparkling wine or champagne with orange juice. Always add sparkling wine or champagne first. On top of it add orange juice. The cocktail will blend nicely this way without creating any mess. In case you want to add liqueur, pour it into the glass first, then the sparkling wine followed by orange juice. Before mixing the drinks chill them in the fridge.

Tips

  • Champagne flutes are best for serving mimosas. If you don't have them use the regular wine glasses.
  • Chill the glasses instead of adding ice as it will change the taste by diluting the drink.
  • Add pulp-free orange juice as mimosa is best enjoyed in smooth bubbly form.
  • Be playful and mix and match. Experiment with different juices and liqueur.

Variations

  • Add pineapple or cranberry juice.
  • Pour grapefruit juice instead of orange juice.
  • Add strawberry puree at the bottom of the glass.
  • Add chopped fruits like peach at the bottom of the glass.
  • Add liqueur.
  • Create a non-alcoholic version with sparkling soda or flavored water.

Mimosa is a great drink for serving guests on any occasion. It can quench your thirst in summer. You must serve it chilled. So, put the champagne glass in the refrigerator for some time and then pour the wine and juice to make mimosa. It is best to make a mimosa right before serving instead of making it before. That way its taste and flavor will retain. However, if you are using freshly squeezed orange juice, you can make the orange juice the night before and chill it inside the fridge.
